THA, the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (TDMHSAS) and Tennessee College of Emergency Physicians (TCEP) are hosting a webinar on Friday, June 19, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. CT as part of the July 1 roll-out of the SMART medical clearance form for inpatient mental health services.

The group will discuss the use of the form as a proven best practice in streamlining the referral to necessary mental health services, reducing unnecessary testing and resulting wait times in the hospital emergency room, and improving the patient experience.

This webinar is free and open to all interested stakeholders.

Beginning July 1, TDMHSAS has approved the use of the SMART form as the primary mechanism for medical clearance or “medical stabilization” to the regional mental health institutes (RMHIs) and the state-funded crisis stabilization units. Presenters on the June 19 webinar will discuss the use of the SMART form as a standardized process to reduce variability across the delivery system and improve communication and coordination between emergency rooms, mobile crisis teams and receiving facilities.

Emergency departments are highly encouraged to adopt the form into practice. Private inpatient mental health leaders also are invited to participate in the webinar and encouraged to adopt this proven tool to further enhance the Tennessee mental health delivery system of care.

This project is an outgrowth of the ongoing partnership between THA, TDMHSAS and TCEP to reduce emergency room boarding and better care for patients in mental health crisis. Other tools and resources from this partnership can be found on the THA website and include:

  • Emergency department psychiatric medication treatment protocols
  • Revamped 6401/6404 process
  • A new 6404 e-writer tool
  • State crisis system FAQs
