Governor Bill Haslam has declared Monday, April 16 as Healthcare Decisions Day in Tennessee. On this day, members of the Honoring Choices Tennessee Coalition – which includes THA – will focus on helping Tennesseans understand the importance of having an advance directive and end-of-life planning.
People never know when an accident or serious illness will leave them incapable of making their own healthcare decisions. An advance directive or living will is a written statement of a person’s wishes regarding medical treatment, made to ensure those wishes are carried out should the person be unable to communicate them to a physician.
Without an advance directive, critical decisions about one’s health are left to healthcare providers or family members who are forced to guess what their loved one may want. An advance directive provides peace of mind in knowing an individual’s wishes are carried out relative to their healthcare.
Please encourage your employees, patients and families to visit the Honoring Choices Tennessee Coalition’s website (advancedirectivestn.org). There, they’ll gain access to many resources, including a printable brochure that can be completed and shared as an advance directive.
Since its inception, THA has been an active part of the Honoring Choices Tennessee Coalition. Other members include AARP, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, Healthy Shelby, Hospice of Chattanooga, Q-Source, Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability, Tennessee Department of Health, Tennessee Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, Tennessee Department of Transportation, Tennessee End of Life Partnership, Tennessee Health Care Association/Tennessee Center for Assisted Living, Tennessee Hospice Organization, Tennessee Medical Association and the Tennessee Nursing Association.
