Nurse Preceptor Incentive Program
Volunteer with your employer to grow the next generation of nurses and receive a monetary incentive for your time and effort.
THA is excited to launch a pilot program to support nurse preceptors in the state of Tennessee. For the pilot, we will provide incentives and professional development opportunities to two cohorts of nurse preceptors. Program evaluation and feedback from the cohort participants will be utilized in developing future recipients.
The goal of the preceptor program is to:
- Increase the knowledge of preceptors on concepts and theories in learning, communication, and academic preceptorship.
- Reduce a shortage of clinical settings for students.
- Increase the number of nurses entering the Tennessee state workforce.
Preceptor Requirements
Applicants will need to complete the following items to qualify for the student preceptor incentive. This incentive is only available for precepting student nurses at this time.
Preceptors will follow the process outlined below to participate in the program:
Preceptors will complete two (2) professional development courses and complete hours within one of three (3) ranges.
Incentives for preceptors vary based on the number of hours of preceptorship:
Spring 2025 Cohort
- December 3, 2024, 9:00am CT: Nurse Preceptor Cohort Application Opens
- December 17, 2024, 4:00pm CT: Nurse Preceptor Cohort Application Closes
- January 6, 2025, 5:00pm CT: Notification of Acceptance to cohort & Nurse Preceptor Incentive Documentation link sent to cohort participants
- May 10, 2025, 5:00pm CT: Nurse Preceptor Incentive Documentation deadline
- Incentives distributed by May 31, 2025

- This program is only available to those precepting student nurses (LPN, RN, APRN) currently.
- Student placement is NOT a part of this program.
- Preceptors should work with facility leadership or those that manage clinical placements in your organization to find student placements.
- Preceptors must complete all elements of the program and submit documents by the due date indicated for each incentive cycle.
- Ensure that your participation in this program is not a violation of employer policies. Please contact your leader or Human Resources office as necessary.
- Local, state, and federal government nursing employees should confirm eligibility for the preceptorship grant program.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Must have an unrestricted Tennessee (state or compact) nursing license.
- Be a Tennessee licensed advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) providing clinical preceptorship at an eligible practice site for APRN students enrolled in an approved accredited Tennessee public or private school of nursing.
- Be a Tennessee or Multi-State licensed registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN) who provides clinical education at an eligible practice site for RN or LPN students in an approved and accredited Tennessee public or private school of nursing.
Application Open: December 3, 2024, 9am CT – December 17, 2024, 4pm CT
An eligible practice site is a clinical site that has been approved by a Tennessee state public or private nursing education program for student clinical practice. The nursing education program and the clinical facility must have a current clinical affiliation agreement.
Students attending schools in the following states may complete clinical hours: Alabama, Kentucky, Virginia, Georgia, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri. However, precepted hours must be completed within the state of Tennessee.

Preceptor Training
Free self-paced learning module from The University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

- Please create an account, complete the training, and submit the completion certification with your incentive documentation.

- Course completion certificate or transcript from CE now must be submitted.
True Colors Emotional Intelligence in Preceptorship
- Preceptor must attend one (1) session and submit course completion certificate via documentation.
- Virtual Instructor Led Course
- Gain knowledge and insight to communication and learning styles via the True Colors Assessment.
Details will be provided in the cohort acceptance email.
Preceptor Verification of Hours
To verify the number of precepted hours by each preceptor, academic partners are asked to identify a person(s) to confirm hours. This person will attest to the hours submitted by the preceptor as accurate.
The Preceptor will:
Complete the Preceptor Verification of Hours form and provide the following information:
- Preceptor name
- School type, city & state
- Student name
- Student type
- Dates of preceptorship
- Number of hours
- The preceptor will identify the school representative for hour approval and enter email for notification.
- The preceptor is tasked with monitoring and documenting their preceptorship hours, and then submit a fully completed Preceptor Verification of Hours form through the application portal by specific deadlines for each reimbursement cycle. These deadlines will be prominently displayed on the THA Preceptor Incentive Website.
- All submissions must be received by the deadline stated on the THA Preceptor Incentive Program Website. Deadlines are firm. Submissions will not be processed after the specified due date listed on the preceptor webpage.
Nursing Program will:
- On the Preceptor Verification of Hours form, complete the academic section and verify the preceptor hours of each preceptor.
- The Nursing Dean/Director should verify the accuracy of the following:
- Preceptor’s full name is listed on the form
- Student’s full name is listed on the form
- Beginning and ending dates of the preceptorship experience are documented in the MM/DD/YY format.
- Preceptor has met the number of stated clinical hours per semester
- Signature of the nursing program Dean/Director (or delegate) is present prior to submitting the Preceptor Verification of Hours form.
Payment Process: (links and instructions will be sent in the cohort acceptance email)
Complete the W-9 form and upload it through a secure link provided by Tennessee Hospital Association.
W-9 will be issued to the award recipient for payment when the following criteria are met:
- The preceptor meets all requirements listed above.
- The minimum number of hours in a range has been completed.
Payments will be made via check to the preceptor by the identified date for each incentive period.
